. On THIS DAY in 1862, more than 4,000 spectators gathered to watch the largest single-day mass execution in U.S. history when 38 Dakota men took their places on the scaffold, holding hands as their voices rang out a Dakota song. White coverings were pulled over their faces, and an ax cut the rope holding the platform. The unethical hanging of these NativeAmerican men is remembered today by the arrival of the Dakota38riders to Mankato from their 330-mile trek.
