China's brutal execution van which captures offenders and kills them on-the-spot

China's extensive use of execution vans, a disturbing addition to its array of capital punishment methods, underscores the nation's leading position in state-sanctioned executions.

China, known for its extensive use of various execution methods, including firing squads and lethal injections, has a shocking addition to this list - execution vans. These mobile death vans contribute to the country's status as the world leader in state-sanctioned executions.

China's criminal law is notorious for its severity, with the death penalty applicable to offences ranging from drug trafficking to corruption. The 1997 Penal Code lists 46 crimes punishable by death, creating what Amnesty International refers to as a 'conveyor belt of executions.'

In a recent high-profile case, a couple, Zhang Bo and Ye Chengchen, were executed for throwing their two children off a 15th-floor building. The gruesome act, fuelled by an affair and a desire to eliminate "obstacles," sparked national outrage. Similarly, a son, Wu Xieyu, faced execution for bludgeoning his mother to death with a dumbbell.

While these cases gained public attention, China's secretive approach to death penalty data remains unchanged. The Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty notes a reduction in the number of crimes punishable by death but highlights a stable rate of executions, often unpublicised.

Among the grim revelations is the use of "execution vans" - converted 24-seat buses with concealed execution chambers.

These vans allow state-sanctioned killings without the need for transportation to an execution ground. The method draws chilling comparisons to historical models used during the Holocaust.

China defends these vans as cost-effective and efficient, eliminating the need for traditional execution facilities. Reports suggest a syringe-administered lethal injection inside the van, with a bed sliding out for the condemned criminal.

It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's stick house. Inside the house was Eeyore.

"Hello Eeyore," said Pooh.

"Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet," said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice.

"We just thought we'd check in on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay."

Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now."

Pooh glanced at Piglet, and Piglet glanced at Pooh, and they both settled, one on each side of Eeyore in his twig abode.

Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"

"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are."

"Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better.

Because Pooh and Piglet were There.

No more; no less.

Major General Horatio Gordon Robley with his collection of tattooed Maori heads, 1895

Major General Horatio Gordon Robley with his collection of tattooed Maori heads, 1895

Major-General Horatio Gordon Robley was a British army officer and artist who served in New Zealand during the New Zealand land wars in the 1860s. He was interested in ethnology and fascinated by the art of tattooing as well as being a talented illustrator. He wrote the book Maori Tattooing which was published in 1896.

After he returned to England he built up a notable collection of 35 mokomokai (Maori tattooed heads). In 1908 he offered them to the New Zealand Government for £1,000; his offer, however, was refused.

Later, with the exception of five heads, the collection was purchased by the Natural History Museum, New York, for £1,250.
Moko facial tattoos were traditional in Māori culture until about the mid 19th century when their use began to disappear, although there has been something of a revival from the late 20th century. In pre-European Māori culture, they denoted high social status.
There were generally only men that had full facial moko, though high-ranked women often had moko on their lips and chins. Moko tattoos served as identifying connection between an individual and their ancestors.
When someone with moko died, often the head would be preserved. The brain and eyes were removed, with all orifices sealed with flax fiber and gum.
he head was then boiled or steamed in an oven before being smoked over an open fire and dried in the sun for several days. It was then treated with shark oil. Such preserved heads, called mokomokai, would be kept by their families in ornately-carved boxes and brought out only for sacred ceremonies.
The heads of enemy chiefs killed in battle were also preserved; these mokomokai, being considered trophies of war, would be displayed on the marae and mocked.

They were important in diplomatic negotiations between warring tribes, with the return and exchange of mokomokai being an essential precondition for peace.

Continuing with writing after his retirement, he returned to his interest in tattoos and wrote two books relating to his time in New Zealand, Moko or Maori Tattooing in 1896 and Pounamu: Notes on New Zealand Greenstone.

In the early 19th century, with the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand, tribes in contact with European sailors, traders, and settlers had access to firearms, giving them a military advantage over their neighbors. This gave rise to the Musket Wars, when other tribes became desperate to acquire firearms too, if only to defend themselves.

It was during this period of social destabilization that mokomokai became commercial trade items that could be sold as curios, artworks and as museum specimens that fetched high prices in Europe and America, and which could be bartered for firearms and ammunition.
The demand for firearms was such that tribes carried out raids on their neighbors to acquire more heads to trade for them. They also tattooed slaves and prisoners (though with meaningless motifs rather than genuine moko) in order to provide heads to order.
The peak years of the trade in mokomokai were from 1820 to 1831 (after that the demand for firearms diminished because of market saturation).

Today I want to surprise with the story of a simple Australian shepherd who won the Sydney-Melbourne supermarathon at a distance of 875 km. He ran without sleep in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. He was 61 years old!

The Australian Ultramarathon was held from 1983 to 1991. Each start was attended by experienced athletes who trained for months in order to successfully cover the distance of 864 km from Melbourne to Sydney. Most of the runners were under 30.

They were sponsored by major international brands, providing quality sneakers and comfortable equipment. Imagine the surprise of the athletes when 61-year-old Cliff Young appeared on the track of a large-scale race. In overalls and with galoshes over boots.

Clifford - that's how Young's full name sounds - was born in 1922 into a poor family. The boy spent all his childhood on a family farm in Victoria, a state in southeastern Australia. The area of the property was just over eight square kilometers.

Neither in his youth, nor when he grew up, Cliff was not fond of sports. The man's sudden love for running woke up, it would seem, too late to reach great heights in a new business for himself. The farmer plunged into the conquest of long distances at the age of 57.

In 1982, when Young was 60 years old, he tried to run a thousand miles (about 1.6 thousand kilometers) around Memorial Square in Colak. The man wanted to break the world record, but could not. Fortunately, failure did not stop him on his way to impressive results. A year later, Cliff entered the Australian Super Marathon to cover the distance from Melbourne to Sydney.

On the day of the race, world-famous athletes were perplexed when they saw a 61-year-old man in the area for athletes. At first, everyone thought Young had come as a spectator. Conjecture was dispelled when the man approached the registration desk to obtain the competitor's number. Some eyewitnesses thought that the farmer was simply out of his mind, while others were seriously worried about his health and safety. Indeed, at this age, the body may not withstand such colossal loads.

Young safely got the 64th number and stood in line with the other runners. The film crew, who were at the start, rushed to interview an unusual participant. When the journalists found out that Cliff really intends to run the ultramarathon, and besides, without sponsors and special training, they told him bluntly: "You can't." But the farmer was not taken aback.

“No, I can. I grew up on a farm where we could not afford horses or a car until very recently. Only 4 years ago I bought a car. When the storm was approaching, I went out to herd the sheep. We had 2,000 sheep grazing on 2,000 acres. Sometimes I caught sheep for 2-3 days - it was not easy, but I always caught them. I think I can participate in the race, because it is only 2 days longer and is only 5 days, while I run after the sheep for 3 days. "

When the marathon began, the pros left Cliff far behind. Spectators from all over Australia watched the man, worried and even prayed for him: if only he would finish alive. Moreover, every experienced athlete knew that a distance of 864 kilometers takes about five days of travel. To do this, you need to run for 18 hours every day and sleep for 6. The farmer was not aware of this running plan.

The morning after the start of the race, people learned that Young had not slept and had been running all night. But he still lagged behind other athletes. Every night, Cliff caught up with his rivals, until on the last day he pulled ahead and finally went into a significant lead.
The Australian farmer triumphs in the ultra marathon. It took him 5 days 15 hours and 4 minutes to finish. 10 hours less than the result of the nearest rival! To the surprise of the public, Cliff did not take any prizes for himself. The man refused the $ 10 thousand and distributed it to the rest of the runners, dividing it equally. At that moment, the whole country fell in love with the new national hero.

A year after winning the ultramarathon, 62-year-old Cliff married a 23-year-old girl named Mary Howell. Their wedding was paid for by a chain of stores that sponsored the iconic race. True, after five years the marriage broke up.

In subsequent years, Young did not abandon his favorite business. He continued to run and in February 1990 took part in the first international 24-hour championship in the English city of Milton Keynes. And in November he covered 648 kilometers in the Australian Campbelltown.
In 1997, Cliff gained public attention again. He intended to run 16,000 kilometers to raise money for homeless children. Unfortunately, the man had to interrupt the race after 6.5 thousand kilometers, because his teammate fell ill.

After that, Young faced a terrible disease - cancer. The man fought her for five years. His most recent running achievement was a world record in a six-day marathon in 2000. And in 2003, Cliff died, he was 81 years old.

A human rights expert has condemned Iran’s excessive use of the death penalty, especially for juvenile offenders

A human rights expert has condemned Iran’s excessive use of the death penalty, especially for juvenile offenders

A human rights expert has condemned Iran’s excessive use of the death penalty, especially for juvenile offenders, and is calling for a moratorium on the government’s use of capital punishment.

Ahmed Shaheed, the special U.N. investigator on human rights in Iran, said he is appalled at the high number of executions in Iran. Last year, he said, nearly 1,000 people were executed, the highest number in two decades.

Shaheed, whose expert findings will be debated at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, said he is alarmed by the ongoing practice of executing juvenile offenders, a procedure that is prohibited under international law.

Over the past decade, he said at least 73 minors under age 18 were put to death. He said 16 of them reportedly were executed in 2014 and 2015, the highest figure for five years.

“Iran’s penal code explicitly retains the death penalty for boys as young as 15 lunar years of age and girls as young as nine lunar years for certain crimes such as murder, adultery and sodomy…The number of juvenile executions has increased, not decreased, in the two last years,” he said.

In his report, Shaheed said Iran’s criminal justice system violates the legal rights of its citizens and denies them a fair trial. He said he continues to receive frequent and alarming reports about people being detained for long periods without access to lawyers and subject to torture and ill treatment. He said prisoners are routinely tortured to obtain confessions that are then used as evidence in court.

The report also documents the ongoing abuse of the Bahai religious community. It says the Bahai are harassed and intimidated. They are denied the right to higher education and employment. Many of the community’s leaders are imprisoned.

Shaheed has been investigating Iran’s human rights record for the past five years. He said the government has never allowed him to visit the country. His mandate comes up for renewal at this session of the human rights council. As in previous years, Shaheed said he expects Iran to try to abolish this position.

He said Iran lobbies hard for this to happen. He said that is because Iran, unlike a country like North Korea, cares about its reputation and does not want its human rights record to be displayed before the whole world.

'Rapists' are stripped naked and paraded through the streets as women slap them after 'attacking a 17-year-old girl' in India

Two men accused of raping a 17-year-old girl were paraded naked through the streets with their hands tied behind their backs as women slapped them.

The pair were led through the streets of Yingkiong in far northeastern India by an angry mob before they were handed over to local police.

'It seems the public did such a thing before handing the two to the police,' Police Deputy Inspector General John Neihlaia said.

He said the teenage victim agreed to go out with one of the men after befriending him on social media, but claimed he and three of his friends raped her.

After they were finished the men allegedly dropped her home about 2am and the brave girl went to the police the next morning.

'Meanwhile, the victim's relatives and neighbours caught two of the accused and handed them over to the police,' Inspector General Neihlaia said.

Police were still hunting the other two suspects who were believed to be in their 20s.

Enraged villagers in the state of Arunachal Pradesh have several times rounded up alleged rapists and humiliated them in similar fashion.

Last month the alleged rapist of an eight-year-old girl was paraded through the town of Daporijo, but other incidents were more violent.

Nearly 1,000 people last month stormed a police station in Tezu, grabbed two men accused of the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl, and killed them in the town's marketplace.

A day later, a mob of almost 900 people ransacked the police station at Yingkiong in protest that a man accused of raping a five-year-old girl was moved to another district.

BLOOD EAGLE:

 BLOOD EAGLE:

The Viking Torture Method So Grisly Some Historians Don’t Believe It Actually HappenedViking sagas describe the ritual execution of blood eagle, in which victims were kept alive while their backs were sliced open so that their ribs, lungs, and intestines could be pulled out into the shape of bloody wings. The Vikings didn’t come into towns walking on moonbeams and rainbows. If their sagas are to be believed, the Vikings cruelly tortured their traitors in the name of their god Odin as they conquered territory. If the suggestion of a blood eagle was even uttered, one left town and never looked back. Viking sagas details blood eagle as one of the most painful and terrifying torture methods ever imagine. The story describes how: “Earl Einar went to Halfdan and carved blood-eagle on his back in this wise, that he thrust a sword into his trunk by the backbone and cut all the ribs away, from the backbone down to the loins, and drew the lungs out there….” • The History Of Blood Eagle Executions One of the earliest accounts of the use of the blood eagle is thought to have occurred in 867. It began a few years before, when Aella, king of Northumbria (present-day North Yorkshire, England), fell victim to a Viking attack. Aella killed Viking leader Ragnar Lothbrok by throwing him into a pit of live snakes. In revenge, Lothbrok’s sons invaded England in 865. When the Danes captured York, one of Lothbrok’s sons, Ivar the Boneless, saw to it that Aella would be killed. Of course, simply killing him wasn’t good enough. Ivar’s father Ragnar had — allegedly — met a gruesome fate by a pit of snakes. Ivar the Boneless wanted to make an example out of Aella and to strike fear into the hearts of his enemies. Thus, he committed the damned king to the blood eagle. Modern scholars debate how Vikings performed this ritual torture and whether they even performed the gruesome method at all. The process of the blood eagle is indeed so cruel and grisly that it would be difficult to believe that it could actually be carried out. Regardless of whether it is merely a work of literary fiction, there is no denying the fact that the ritual was stomach-churning. The victim’s hands and legs were tied to prevent escape or sudden movements. Then, the person seeking vengeance stabbed the victim by his tailbone and up towards the rib cage. Each rib was then meticulously separated from the backbone with an ax, which left the victim’s internal organs on full display. The victim is said to have remained alive throughout the entire procedure. What’s worse, the Vikings would then literally rub salt into the gaping wound in the form of a saline stimulant. As if this wasn’t enough, after having all of the person’s ribs cut away and spread out like giant fingers, the torturer then pulled out the lungs of the victim to make it appear as if the person had a pair of wings spread out on his back. Thus, the blood eagle was manifested in all its gory glory. The victim had become a slimy, bloody bird. The Vikings more than describes the torture method. You can also watch it reenacted — but be warned. • The Ritual Behind The Blood Eagle King Aella was not the last royal to face the blood eagle. One scholar believes that at least four other notable figures in Northern European history suffered the same fate. King Edmund of England was also a victim of Ivar the Boneless. Halfdan, son of King Haraldr of Norway, King Maelgualai of Munster, and Archbishop Aelheah were all believed to victims of blood eagle torture because they were victims of Ivar the Boneless. There were two main reasons Vikings used the blood eagle on their victims. First, they believed it was a sacrifice to Odin, father of the Norse pantheon of gods and the god of war. Second, and more plausibly, was that the blood eagle was done as a punishment to honorless individuals. According to the Orkneyinga saga of the Vikings, Halfdan was defeated in battle at the hands of Earl Einar who then tortured him with a blood eagle as he conquered Halfdan’s kingdom. Similarly, Aella was tortured in vengeance. Indeed, even the stories of the blood eagle — true or not — would have emptied out any village just by word of mouth before the Vikings could even make ground there. At the very least, the rumors of such torture would have established the Vikings as a divinely fearsome lot — and not to be trifled with. • Ritual Or Rumor? Victims of the practice died in the 800s and 900s, possibly into the 1000s. Written accounts, often embellished and told for entertainment during long winter nights up north, didn’t come about until the 1100s and 1200s. Writers of the Viking sagas heard stories and wrote them down. Perhaps they embellished the ferocity of Vikings to make them sound more heroic. A depiction of messengers of King Aella bringing news to the sons of Ragnar Lothbrok. Clearly, that didn’t do any good. However, there may be merit to the blood eagle story. The poets who wrote them down were very specific in the method used. Surely, someone actually tried this torture method because of the gory details that someone described. One Danish historian, Saxo Grammaticus, relays the ritual as merely the means of carving an eagle into a victim’s back and other details were added later and, “combined in inventive sequences designed for maximum horror.” Either the blood eagle was an actual thing, or it was a propaganda tool. But either way, it was terrifying. • Other Viking Torture Methods The Vikings employed other torture methods aside from the blood eagle. One was known as Hung meat, which was just as nasty as it sounds. Vikings pierced the heels of victims, threaded ropes through the holes, and then strung them upside-down. Not only was piercing the heels horrendously painful, but the blood ran down to their hearts. The fatal walk was another gruesome testament to torture. A victim’s abdomen was sliced open and a bit of intestine was pulled out. Then the torturer held the victim’s intestines as the victim walked around a tree. Eventually, the entirety of the victim’s intestinal tract would wrap around the tree. Whether it was a blood eagle, hung meat, or a fatal walk, the Vikings knew how to make examples out of their enemies.

Parents are forced to watch ISIS executioner behead their 14-year-old son after he missed Friday prayers

ISIS thugs forced two parents to watch as they beheaded their 14-year-old son for missing Friday prayers, local media has reported.

The terror group, who accused the boy of apostasy, or abandoning Islam, executed him in the northern Syrian city of Jarablus on Saturday.

He is said to have been arrested by ISIS fighters after missing prayers at the central mosque, where fanatical preachers usually deliver propaganda filled speeches.

Local activist Nasser Taljbini told ARA News how the extremists beheaded the boy in front of a large crowd which included his mother and father.

He added: 'Dozens of people attended the brutal execution, including the victim's parents who were forced to witness the beheading of their own son.

'ISIS is trying to prove that it is still powerful despite all the military defeats. The group is trying to terrorize people through conducting such public punishments.'

Kurdish forces bombarded the city, which lies near the Turkish-Syrian border, with artillery shells and mortar fire last month, killing several ISIS fighters.

It is seen as a strategic stronghold for ISIS, who use it to smuggle foreign jihadis into Syria from Turkey.

YPG [People's Protection Units - a Kurdish militia group] spokesman Nuraddin Gaban said their offensive destroyed an ISIS security centre, a Sharia Court and several military vehicles in Jarablus.

He added: 'At least 21 terrorists were killed on Monday... We have intensified our military campaign against the terror group in the northern countryside of Aleppo in coordination with the U.S.-led coalition.

'Jarablus is one of our main targets at the moment... If we retake it, we would be blocking one of the main routes in the face of foreign terrorists who continue to cross from Turkey into Syria in order to join their alleged Caliphate.'

Soviet female POW in German captivity, 1941. German soldiers were ordered to execute female servicemen on the spot. Often before doing so, these unfortunate women faced all sorts of humiliations and abuse from their captors

The Germans had very sexist views on society and viewed the practice of having women serving in the military and participating in combat as barbaric. Orders were passed by German generals where they told their
men to execute female soldiers on the spot. Add to this the fact that Germans viewed Slavic people as subhumans half of whom needed to be exterminated which doesn't make this order seem unreal.

Nazi Germany didn't let women work in essential war industries for the same reason. Instead they
imported men from occupied countries (especially slavs) to serve as industrial slaves/serfs. When the Third Reich finally went to a total war economy it was in 1944 and way too late to change anything

Instead they imported men from occupied countries (especially slavs) to serve as industrial slaves/serfs.
And if I recall they ran into a lot of issues with sub-standard products as a result. If the guy making your fancy new jet fighter is a slave who hates you, you may run into QC issues.

Who was most ahead of their time.. In 1697, a young Scottish student named Thomas Aikenhead made some rather shocking statements. Statements that, at the time, did not go over well at all. It wasn’t Aikenhead’s intention to shock people, mind you — he merely got drawn into an argument with fellow students at the University of Edinburgh.

The discussion was one of a philosophical and religious nature. Some of Aikenhead’s fellow students were shocked by his irreligious stance. They reported him to the authorities for blasphemy. Here is the indictment, summing up what the young Scottish student said.

The prisoner had repeatedly maintained, in conversation, that theology was a rhapsody of ill-invented nonsense, patched up partly of the moral doctrines of philosophers, and partly of poetical fictions and extravagant chimeras: That he ridiculed the holy scriptures, calling the Old Testament Ezra's fables, in profane allusion to Esop's Fables; That he railed on Christ, saying, he had learned magick in Egypt, which enabled him to perform those pranks which were called miracles: That he called the New Testament the history of the imposter Christ;

That he said Moses was the better artist and the better politician; and he preferred Muhammad to Christ: That the Holy Scriptures were stuffed with such madness, nonsense, and contradictions, that he admired the stupidity of the world in being so long deluded by them: That he rejected the mystery of the Trinity as unworthy of refutation; and scoffed at the incarnation of Christ

The case was brought in front of the Lord Advocate, Sir James Stewart of Scotland. Who decided to make an example of the rebellious student and have him put to death for his blasphemous statements.

A jury agreed, and the death penalty was delivered.

Thomas Aikenhead was only twenty years old when he was taken to the gallows in 1697. He was the last person in Great Britain to be put to death for blasphemy. Many of the things he said could have been by any edgy teenager on Reddit or Quora. But three hundred years ago, such commentary was lethal. To be ahead of your times can often have lethal consequences.

The five men were found tied up near a pickup truck on Thursday morning and a handwritten note was found placed on the windshield of the truck, whose author or authors say they belong to the Gulf Cartel, the dominant organized crime group in this part of Mexico.

The note said some Gulf Cartel members were responsible for the kidnapping and killings and apologized for their actions.

"We have decided to deliver those involved and directly responsible," the note said, presumably referring to the five men found tied up at the scene.

Multiple different law enforcement agencies, along with members of the Mexican army, responded to the scene.

Police allegedly found two weapons inside the truck when they detained the five men -- an AK-47 and an AR-15 -- as well as four AK-47 magazines, three AR-15 magazines and cartridges of different calibers, according to a copy of the police report from Mexican authorities obtained by ABC News from a source close to the investigation.

Police found the men inside the truck with their hands tied with belts, along with the note, according to the police report.

Multiple sources close to the investigation said they believe the note left on the windshield to be legitimate.

Neither ABC News nor U.S. officials have been able to independently verify the authenticity of the note.

The four kidnapped Americans -- Eric James Williams, Zindell Brown and cousins Latavia "Tay" McGee and Shaeed Woodard -- drove Friday morning into Matamoros, in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas just south of Brownsville, Texas.

McGee had traveled from South Carolina to Mexico for a cosmetic medical procedure.

Soon after crossing the border, "unidentified gunmen fired upon the passengers in the vehicle," and then put the four Americans in another car and fled, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City said.

Mexican investigators believe the kidnappers may have wrongly believed the Americans were rival human traffickers, a source close to the investigation told ABC News.

The two survivors -- McGee and Williams -- were found Tuesday morning in a wooden house in the Lagunona area, outside of Matamoros, Mexican officials said.

Williams was shot in both legs while McGee was largely unharmed, family members said.

One of the deceased was also found inside the house, and the second was found outside it, a source close to the investigation told ABC News.

During the three days they were held, the Americans were transferred to various places, including a medical clinic, in order to create confusion and avoid rescue efforts, according to the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal.

The two survivors were being treated at a hospital in Brownsville following their rescue.

The bodies of the two Americans killed were repatriated to the U.S. on Thursday.

A 24-year-old suspect arrested earlier this week in connection with the incident has now been formally indicted on an aggravated kidnapping charge, the Attorney General's Office of Tamaulipas said on Friday.

The man was allegedly acting as a lookout when authorities finally located the four missing Americans.

The office also announced a homicide charge in the killing of Arely Pablo, 33, a Mexican bystander who died after being hit by a stray bullet during the kidnapping.

The alleged cartel members have been indicted in connection with the kidnapping, the Tamaulipas attorney general announced Monday.

History of lesbianism

 History of lesbianism

History of lesbianism

Lesbianism is the sexual and romantic desire between women. There are historically fewer mentions of lesbianism than male homosexuality, due to many historical writings and records focusing primarily on men.

Ancient Mesopotamia

Women's sexuality in ancient Mesopotamia is not well documented. Stephanie Lynn Budin, writing on love magic, argues that "there remains no evidence for lesbianism in this regard (or any other from Mesopotamia)." However, there are at least two pieces of textual evidence for Mesopotamian lesbianism. One is a divinatory text which mentions female same-sex activity, while another, more explicit text remains unpublished.

There are also mentions in the Code of Hammurabi (c. 1700 BC) of a sal-zikrum. This term may translate to "woman-man" and refer to a gender-nonconforming individual, "perhaps a female functionary, attached to a temple." The word is regularly treated as grammatically feminine, but a sal-zikrum was allowed to marry women, and she inherited the same amount as her brothers.: 34  It is possible that a female transgressor of gender boundaries was regarded as a "woman-man" because of her social behavior (i.e., relationships with other women).[citation needed] The term sal-nu-bar, according to a disputed belief, referred to women who were allowed to marry but not to have children, and so "brought another woman with them to bear children"

In addition, an Old Assyrian text writes of two women, Ewanika and Adi-matum, who had a betrothal contract for their "daughter." It is possible that the father passed away, leaving the two women as widows.

Early imperial China

In early Chinese history sexual activity between women was accepted, and sometimes actively encouraged: 135  Female same-sex relationships were described with a special term (traditional Chinese: 對食; simplified Chinese: 对食; pinyin: duìshí), literally 'paired eating', possibly referring to cunnilingus. In the second or third century AD Ying Shao defined it as "when palace women attach themselves as husband and wife". Such relationships sometimes formed between government slaves or members of the emperor's harem. For example, under Emperor Cheng's rule (33 – 7 BC) the slave Dào Fáng (Chinese: 道房) had a homosexual relationship with Cáo Gōng (traditional Chinese: 曹宮; simplified Chinese: 曹宫), the daughter of a slave. The sex handbook Dongxuanzi (Chinese: 洞玄子; pinyin: Dòng Xuán Zǐ, possibly dating to the fifth century AD:  also contains examples of female same-sex contact. In the position called The Paired Dance of the Female Blue Phoenixes, two women practice scissoring: 135–136

Ancient Greece

Evidence of female homosexuality in the ancient Greek world is limited. Most surviving sources from the classical period come from Athens, and they are without exception written by men. At least among these Athenian men, the discussion and depiction of female homosexual activity seems to have been taboo. Kenneth Dover suggests that, due to the role played by the phallus in ancient Greek men's conceptions of sexuality, female homosexual love was not explicitly defined as a sexuality or category by the authors of surviving sources.

Three more people have been put to death in Saudi Arabia, meaning it has executed more people this year than it did in the past year,

Rate Of Executions Doubles In Saudi Arabia

The Saudi civil service advertises for eight more executioners as the number of people put to death soars in the Islamic kingdom.

Three more people have been put to death in Saudi Arabia, meaning it has executed more people this year than it did in the whole of 2014.

The kingdom, which enforces a strict version of Islamic sharia law, carried out its 88th execution on Tuesday, surpassing the 87 prisoners killed last year.

The interior ministry said the latest to be put to death were Saudis Awad al Rowaili and Lafi al Shammary, who were convicted of smuggling amphetamines.

They were executed in the northern region of Jawf, the official Saudi Press Agency said.

Another Saudi, Mohammed al Shihri, was executed in the southwestern region of Asir for murder.

Those beheaded this year include Siti Zainab, an Indonesian maid who was convicted of murder despite concerns about her mental health.

Another Indonesian domestic worker, Karni Binti Medi Tarsim, was executed days later.

The killings led to Jakarta summoning Riyadh's ambassador in protest.

Around half of the prisoners executed this year were Saudis - the rest were from Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, Jordan, Burma, the Philippines, India, Chad, Eritrea and Sudan.

The kingdom is in the top five countries in the world for putting people to death, rights groups say.

It ranked number three in 2014, after China (2,400 executions) and Iran (289), and ahead of Iraq (61) and the US (35), according to Amnesty International figures.

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy (abandonment of religious faith) and armed robbery are all punishable by death in the Gulf nation.

Executions are carried out in public, mostly by beheading with a sword.

A surge in executions began towards the end of the reign of King Abdullah, who died in January.

It accelerated under his successor King Salman, in what Amnesty called an unprecedented "macabre spike".

The Berlin-based European Saudi Organisation for Human Rights said the death penalty is "often applied to powerless individuals with no government connection".

Amnesty says court proceedings in the country "fall far short" of global norms of fairness.

"Trials in death penalty cases are often held in secret. Defendants are rarely allowed formal representation by lawyers" and may be convicted solely on the basis of "confessions", it said in a report.

With the number of beheadings and limb amputations soaring, the civil service is advertising for eight more executioners.

It says no special qualifications are needed and the jobs are at the lower end of the civil service pay scale.

Saudi officials have not said why the number of executions has increased, but experts believe it may be because more judges have been appointed, allowing a backlog of criminal cases to be heard.

They think it may also be because Salman wants to project a tough image in the face of regional unrest.

One Saudi activist, who asked for anonymity, said the death penalty is carried out only with the king's approval.

"So if the king is strict he will sign this paper," said the activist.
