Italian partisans wanted to let go of Clara, believing she had been manipulated by Mussolini. However, Clara wanted to die alongside Mussolini.

Mussolini and Clara were executed the next day on April 28, 1945. Their bodies were hung upside down at a gas station on Piazza Loreto in Milano.
