In
1983, Bruce Boccia made an attempt to tie the world record for high
dive at Sea World in San Diego. You can see him here, attempting to jump
from a height of 172 ft (52.4 m). The woman on the left is his mom,
watching nervously.
Bruce Boccia was one of the
five professional divers who attempted to break the world record for
high dive in 1983 at Sea World in San Diego. The record was set by
Oliver Favre in 1981, who jumped from 53.9 m (177 ft) and suffered
multiple fractures and internal injuries .
Boccia
and his fellow divers, Rick Charls, Rick Winters, Dana Kunze, and Mike
Foley, decided to jump from 52.4 m (172 ft), which was still a very
dangerous height. They practiced for months, using a crane to lift them
to the platform and a pool filled with bubbles to cushion their landing .
Boccia's
mother, who was a nurse, was very worried about her son's safety. She
traveled from New York to San Diego to watch his jump, hoping that he
would change his mind. She said that she was proud of him, but also
scared for him . Boccia, who was 23 years old at the time, said that he
was confident and excited, but also nervous. He said that he wanted to
prove himself and make history .
On the day of
the jump, Boccia was the third diver to go. He climbed up the ladder to
the platform, waved to the crowd, and prepared to dive. He said a
prayer, crossed himself, and jumped. He reached a speed of about 100
km/h (62 mph) before hitting the water. He made a perfect entry, with no
splash. He emerged from the water, smiling and waving. He had
successfully completed the jump, without any injuries. He hugged his
mother, who was relieved and happy. He said that he felt great, and that
it was the best moment of his life .
Boccia
and his four teammates were all credited with the record, as they all
jumped from the same height and survived. They received a plaque and a
certificate from the Guinness Book of World Records. They also received a
lot of media attention and admiration from the public. They were hailed
as heroes and pioneers of high diving . Boccia said that he was proud
of his achievement, but also humble. He said that he was not a
daredevil, but a diver. He said that he loved the sport, and that he
would continue to dive, but not from such heights . He said that he had
fulfilled his dream.
